Welcome to this month’s feed mill engineering news from ISF. September brought a genuinely emotional community evening, alongside some big steps forward behind the scenes.
Behind the design
Our design team shared how they work this month. They use 3D modelling software to map out exactly how new machinery fits into a customer’s existing mill. Real constraints like limited space, awkward access and site-specific regulations shape every decision.
We check every project against standards like BS EN 1090 and CDM regulations from the outset. This means what we build is safe, compliant and ready to install with minimal disruption.
A humbling night at the Community Pride Awards
The Press York Community Pride Awards gave us one of the month’s real highlights. We sponsored Charity Fundraiser of the Year, an award close to our hearts, since we know firsthand the time and effort that goes into raising money for charity.
Iain presented the award to Alison Goude, and what a woman. Alison fundraises for the Meningitis Research Foundation in memory of her daughter Livia, who died from Meningitis B at just 19. She turned her own experience into something that helps others, in an incredible display of selflessness and resilience.
So many incredible people filled that room. It felt genuinely special to be part of it, and humbling to hear everyone’s stories. The evening opened with a performance from local singer Finlet Barrett-Carter, of Britain’s Got Talent fame, who was brilliant. Huge congratulations to all the nominees and winners. You make the world a better place.
Meet the team: Simon Manock
Our Meet the Team series continued with Simon Manock this month. Simon joined ISF over 20 years ago and has grown from a skilled designer into a dynamic member of our senior leadership team. That experience earned him a joint nomination for SHAPA’s Engineer of the Year award this year.

Our Cumbrian mixer upgrade case study featured in the Process Industry Informer’s SHAPA supplement this summer. The issue focused on innovation in blending, drying, and material movement. Double handling and dust cause problems many mills recognise well. This project shows what solving them properly delivers: a safer working environment and real headroom to grow production.
Exciting work began this month as part of the Made Smarter Programme, a government-backed initiative supporting manufacturers with funded expert advice on digital transformation.
It’s early days. A specialist already reviewed our processes, and the project marks an important step in future-proofing the business, supporting succession planning and finding smarter ways to work as we grow.
Marking National Manufacturing Day
National Manufacturing Day rounded off the month, a day when manufacturers across the UK open their doors to show what goes on behind the scenes.
We didn’t open ours this year, but it felt right to mark the day and reflect on what we’re proud of: the difference between supplying equipment and truly engineering a solution.
Busy in the workshop
The workshop has had a strong month too. Among the work coming off the shop floor has been a batch of aluminium maintenance platforms, fabricated in-house to give engineers safe, practical access for ongoing maintenance and inspection work on-site.
Our team is growing too. We’re currently hiring a Draughtsperson to work across 3D modelling, fabrication detailing, and structural steelwork layouts. If you know someone who’s a good fit, you can find the full job description on our website.
